Kia ora Walter,

Thank you for providing me the official email address for the NKKWTB; one which your office uses to openly communicate with the NKKWTB. As you and Ian have confirmed the NKKWTB are refusing to communicate openly with it's iwi (me); unless I provide my personal details. Since I have been threaten a number of times by supporters of the NKKWTB; I'm not willing to provide my personal details.

So here we are at an impasse; although the Minister has advised “It is the mandated entity’s responsibility to communicate with its claimant community”; the entity refuses to communicate openly and freely with us. The Governments AIP offer is publically available; all of the funding details are publically available; the NKKWTB deed is publically available; but the entity still refuses to communicate openly. I must admit I'm perplexed; I can't see how the government expects the land claim process to succeed unless they can convince the entity to openly communicate.

I thank you and your office for your attempt at a resolution; unfortunately an unsuccessful one.

Regards, Paeara Family

P.S. As you can see I've cc'd the NKKWTB in a forlorn hope!

Tena koutou e te whanau o Paeara,

I have noted the exchanges of correspondence between our office and yourselves since the letter from the Ministers office dated 14 October 2009 in which the Minister advised “It is the mandated entity’s responsibility to communicate with its claimant community”. The Minister also advised that TPK was available to assist you with contacting Kahukuraariki Trust Board if you wished to receive assistance.

Following your request for our help I asked Ian Peters one of our regional Kaiwhakarite to contact you regarding the concerns you had raised and provide any contact details that he may have for the Trust Board or its Board Members. I also advised that I was happy to provide you with a contact list for Iwi to communicate your website address as it would be inappropriate for TPK to do so.

In regards to the Iwi contact list I apologise that this hasn’t already been sent. A table of contact details that are publicly available through the Iwi websites or the telephone directory is provided below.

In regards to your request to assist with communicating with the Trust Board, It is not unreasonable for us to request (as Ian has done) your contact details so that he may engage with you in person to discuss. I do not agree that we are withholding information from you. To date all your correspondence with our office and the Ministers Office has been via email requesting an email address for the Trust Board. Yet by your own admission the Trust Board refuse to respond to your emails. The supply of an email address for the Trust Board does therefore seem to be a futile exercise. However to respond to your request provided here is the last known email address we have for the Trust Board nkkwtrustboard@xtra.co.nz, which is the same address that you have on your website.

We can’t force the Trust Board to respond to your emails and we can’t provide you with any personal contact details without the permission of the individual/s. However, through the relationships that TPK has there is an opportunity to facilitate/broker communication between yourself and the Trust Board. To aid that process we need to be able to have open dialogue with you and the Trust Board. As you are not willing to do so then there is little else we can do to assist you any further.

As you already know who the Trust Board members, Negotiators and Legal Counsel are, perhaps you can do a search of the public records  and see what you can locate? E.g. Internet, White Pages, Telephone Directory.

Kia Ora Walter,

Unfortunately Mr Peters is refusing to provide me with the information I have asked for; I would have thought that this information would be freely available under the Official Information Act. Is it possible for you to provide me with the email contact details for NKKWTB as the published email addresses I have on my website for Ella Henry, Pita Pangari and the NKKWTB no longer work. I would have gone to the NKKWTB website for this information but it is no longer active.

Additionally, I have not received an iwi email list from Liz Makene as yet. I've emailed her asking to send me the list; however I haven't received a reply as yet. Can you please help me?

Regards, Paeara Family

Subject: re your request

We have made inquiries re communicating with the Kahukuraariki Trust Board and have had no difficulty in making contact with them, also it is  noticed on your web site that you have their contact details and the list of the Trust Board and negotiators. It is evident to us that their lack of communication with your group is primarily due to the fact that you refuse to give them your personal details (name, phone number etc) which is also my experience. When the ministers requested our assistance I  requested personal details so we could enter into meaningful dialogue  however you have chosen to ignore those request and instead accuse us of withholding information. I suggest that you need to declare who you are before the trust Board is prepared to communicate with your whanau.

Ian Peters
